This was a teaching project initially developed and taught independently, later expanding into shared teaching with Tanil Raif of Harvard GSD, centred on form as a tool for critique, using Enzo Mari’s 44 Valutazioni and the experimental model-making of Bureau Spectacular as key references. The course explored how fragments could be manipulated, reassembled and materially transformed to challenge established architectural languages, with students moving between digital modelling, physical fabrication and spatial observation to develop ideas through making.
The teaching focused on experimentation and iteration, with students producing a series of individual and serial models that tested scale, consequence, material and formal relationships, using techniques including 3D printing, sanding, filling and spray finishing. It covered digital modelling methods for physical production, technical workshops and tutorials, and used group reviews and discussions to support the development of each project, with process documentation and reflection forming an important part of the work.
The course gradually moved from drawing-based thinking towards material-led making, asking students to treat the model as a tool for invention and critique, and to build up a body of work through repeated transformation and reworking. The individual studies were eventually brought together through a collective assembly, where the different pieces were curated and composed into a shared formal language and presented as a group exhibition, supported by documentation, photography and digital portfolios. The later shared teaching with Tanil Raif expanded this approach through a wider exchange of methods and perspectives, connecting the course's material and formal investigations to broader architectural conversations.
